When Ana and I first bought our home one of the first projects on the list was to figure out a way to make our kitchen look decent with a tight budget. Right off the bat we did some small things like painting the countertops and sealing them (2017). We then installed open shelves to open up the space a bit more (2018). One of the last touch ups we did (2020), we painted the lower kitchen cabinets a navy color and installed a new sink. After a couple years of living with those quick fixes, we finally pulled together the funds to support a larger kitchen remodel with an entire kitchen demo and gut, we took down a closet wall, wired electrical to outlets, minor duct work, re-floored the entire house with a LVP (vinyl plank) and so much more! It took a solid 8 months, many months spent waiting for our IKEA cabinets to ship because of their interesting waitlist process (probably a separate post on IKEA cabinet specifics).

With everything that was done to the kitchen we will be breaking up this main post into smaller more detailed posts, but have fun scrolling through and seeing the progression. We still have some fine details to address and from the title name, of course this is Phase 1 of 2. Phase 1 was the lower half of the kitchen and Phase 2 will be the upper half, Ana and I will go into more specifics on Phase 2 at a later date (at this rate probably next year 😅).

Lowkey, I promised Ana we would build her dream kitchen in about 5 years from when we bought the house and wow did that sneak up on me! Luckily, we are a little over 5 years after buying our home, we are a lot more financially stable and we knew going into this last remodel that we were going to have to dish out some bucks to get that dream kitchen that we’ve been planning out. But thankfully we saved so much money since we are doing everything ourselves, with the one exception of hiring out the countertops.

Before & After

A few more ‘After’ pics before getting into the demolition pictures.

We are going to break this post up into smaller posts with more specifics on the finer details. Use the list below as a guide to the more detailed posts. I hope it’s not too intimidating, I tried to break it up into definable steps that make sense. Everyone’s project is different, but we are hoping our pictures and information will encourage and excite you to dream up your new future kitchen!
